Germany and Italy plan to keep a total of up to 1,350 soldiers in Afghanistan in 2015 to help train local armed forces, their defense ministries said on Tuesday, a slightly larger contingent than had been previously expected. After more than a decade of combat operations in Afghanistan , where Taliban insurgents remain a major security threat, NATO plans to refocus next year on its core mission of defending Europe and North America. But the United States and other nations want to keep thousands of troops there for counte…
When will the war in Ukraine end? Experts Offer their predictions.
WASHINGTON and ROME — Germany’s promise early this year to send tanks to Ukraine marked the country’s latest concession and provided a cap to the gradual escalation in the kind of equipment allies were supplying. Indeed, when Russia invaded Ukraine last February, its allies resisted pleas for offensive aid and followed a narrow definition of protective equipment. In Berlin, leaders initially shied away from aid that didn’t fit the German definition of “defensive.” That’s changed, with Germany now pledging to deliver Leopard 2 battle tanks and …

India Considers Buying 126 Eurofighters From Germany

IS seven times bigger than Western estimates: Kurds claim
LONDON: The West may have severely underestimated the strength of the Islamic State (IS) Sunni radical organization, which may have raised an army of at least 2,00,000 fighters, a Kurdish leader has claimed. This number is seven to eight times more than Western intelligence estimates of up to 31,500 fighters, said Fuad Hussein, the chief of staff of Kurdish president Massoud Barzani, in an exclusive interview to The Independent on Sunday. Hussein speculates that the CIA and US intelligence agencies may only have been speaking abou…
Japan military drill with US, Australia likely to upset China
JAPAN is set to join the main biennial US-Australia military drill for the first time during which its troops are expected to take part in large amphibious assault exercises in Queensland that are sure to anger Beijing. While Australia’s defence forces refused to confirm Japan would participate in the huge Talisman Sabre exercise, the US military happily confirmed an invitation had been issued. The Australian understands Japan will send a contingent of about 30 officers and troops to exercises that have focused on storming “enem…
U.S. military role in Afghanistan will still be combat
President Barack Obama may not call what American troops will do in Afghanistan next year “combat,” but he has quietly laid the groundwork for continuing battle against the Taliban. Obama has authorized the military to provide air support to Afghan troops next year after the U.S. has completed the transition to its “advise- and-assist” mission, the White House says. At the same time, administration officials say they aren’t increasing the number of troops, slowing the drawdown or changing their mission, but are allowing commanders …
US: Obama signals 'new phase' against Islamic State in Iraq has begun
President Barack Obama has said the deployment of 1,500 more US troops to Iraq marks a "new phase" against Islamic State militants. He told CBS TV that the new troops, although non-combat advisers, could help Iraq go on the attack against IS. A US-led coalition has been helping Iraqi and Kurdish ground forces with hundreds of air strikes since August. Iraqi forces have now reportedly seized large parts of Baiji - home to Iraq's biggest oil refinery - from IS. Officials said troops now controlled so…

India Launches Drive To Buy Half of Its Weapons From Indigenous Sources
NEW DELHI — Under a new policy, at least half of India’s total weapon and equipment needs in the next 10 to 12 years — worth more than $100 billion — could be produced domestically. Analysts and military officers are divided about the wisdom of relying so heavily on the local defense industry to meet the military’s needs quickly and effectively. The new approach, announced this month, is based on a countrywide “Make in India” campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to boost the domestic industry, a source in the Defence Mini…
