TOP TEN COUNTRIES IN NAVAL
Top Ten Countries in Navel Power Total Naval Ship Power Very few global powers are capable of fielding an expensive carrier force at sea. For thousands of years, strength at sea has been one of the defining military factors of any world power. Naval strength is used to respond to territorial disputes as well as enforce maritime borders and protect national interests. Today's navies are often required to operate thousands of miles away from homeports with combat not necessarily requiring line-of-sight. Couple these qualities wi…
How India can act as a global bridge !!
Earlier this year, United States (US) President Donald Trump used his prerogative as G-7 host to suggest inviting the leaders of India, Australia, and South Korea to the annual conclave. “I don’t feel that as a G-7 it properly represents what’s going on in the world. It’s a very outdated group of countries,” Trump said in May. While he later considered adding Brazil, Trump’s proposal was overshadowed by his suggestion that Russia be included, a move opposed by many of his advisers. Meanwhile, questions persist about whether this year’s G…

IAF can’t afford delay in Rafale deal : IAF Chief
Air chief marshal Arup Raha has said that it is critical to keep the $25 billion (Rs 1,50,000 crore) French Rafale fighter deal on schedule as the IAF cannot afford any more delays. Raha’s comments are significant as the Eurofighter consortium, backed by four European countries, is trying to re-enter the race to sell its Typhoon fighters to India. The Germany-led consortium has come up with a revised proposal -- sweetened with a discount -- to sell 126 Typhoons to India, despite losing the world’s biggest fighter contract to Dassault …

The Indian Navy recently put out to tender a contract for the domestic construction of four landing platform dock (LPD) ships at an estimated cost of $2.6 billion U.S., according to my colleagues at Defense News. Two of the ships will be built in a private shipyard depending on which firm wins the contract, while the other two will be built by the state-owned Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL). Each of the competing yards has teamed up with an international builder, which includes Spain’s Navantia and DCNS of France, according to the…

India must integrate its service HQs with MoD
In any other country they may have rated passing mention, but India's intrusive visual media took it upon itself to project each incident as a disaster of Titanic proportions, subjecting it to shrill and ill-informed discussions. The dramatic changes in the navy's upper ranks are bound to unsettle its junior officers and sailors. The new chief's first major challenge, therefore, will be to restore the confidence of h…
The 'miscellaneous' blunder in India's Rafale deal
Dassault Aviation's Rafale won the bid to supply the Indian Air Force with 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft. The multi-billion dollar 'deal of the century' has since languished over price negotiations. Rahul Bedi explains how 'miscellaneous' factors have posed a major hurdle in negotiating the Rafale deal. There is a delicious, albeit hugely expensive, irony involving the ongoing negotiations to procure 126 Dassault Rafale fighters that, in some aspects, parallels the purchase of six French Scorpene submarines…
European drone builders tinker with AI in navigation and targeting
MILAN: Drawing from Ukraine’s battlefield successes, a growing number of European companies have begun fielding drones with artificial intelligence features. An element of Ukraine’s recent “Spider Web” operation on June 1 – a covert drone attack carried out deep inside Russia – was largely overlooked: the supporting role played by AI. According to the Center for Strategic and International studies, AI-driven tools were likely critical in training the software of explosive, first-person-view drones. These tools enabled the drones to spot threat…
