Airbus Defense and Space has deployed and commissioned the third TRS-3D naval radar for the US Navy's littoral combat ship (LCS) programme.
The latest integration of the new radar on the Freedom-class variant of the new Milwaukee LCS (LCS 5) forms part of a deal with Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor.
Airbus Defense and Space Communications, Intelligence, Security and Electronics division sales and marketing director Aaron Johnson said: "The TRS-3D is the choice for ships with multimode radar requirements, as evidenced by it being a global market leader in its class."
Designated as AN / SPS-75 by the US Navy, eight TRS-3D radars have completed their equipment acceptance tests, with each currently in different installation stages on Freedom-class vessels.
The three-dimensional, multimode naval radar is capable of executing a range of missions, including surveillance, self-defence, gunfire support and helicopter control, and can automatically locate and track all types of air and sea targets.
The TRS-3D is currently operational with the National Security Cutters of the US Coast Guard, in addition to the German Navy's K130 corvettes, the Finnish Navy's Squadron 2000 patrol boats and the Norwegian Coast Guard's Nordkapp and Svalbard icebreakers.
Capable of being reconfigured for surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and mine countermeasures, the fast littoral combat ships are designed to operate in the highly trafficked near-shore regions against asymmetric anti-access threats.
