‘It Failed Miserably’: After Wargaming Loss, Joint Chiefs Are Overhauling How the US Military Will Fight
A brutal loss in a wargaming exercise last October convinced the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. John Hyten to scrap the joint warfighting concept that had guided U.S. military operations for decades. “Without overstating the issue, it failed miserably. An aggressive red team that had been studying the United States for the last 20 years just ran rings around us. They knew exactly what we're going to do before we did it,” Hyten told an audience Monday at the launch of the Emerging Technologies Institute, an effort by the National D…
Why America could lose its next war ?
The U.S. Department of Defense loves a good buzz phrase: capability over capacity, making the tough choices, taking risk now to reduce future risk. The DoD has used all three to rationalize a fiscal 2022 budget that shrinks the U.S. military’s size in the hope that new technologies will eventually lead to new acquisitions. The truth is the proposed budget is the latest in a series of funding requests that have fallen short of what the DoD needs to rebuild for the future. The result of 30 years of “building down to build up” is a military that…
US Navy: Bonhomme Richard fire deals a blow to the Navy’s designs in the Indo-Pacific
WASHINGTON – The amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard , which burned through the night while in port in San Diego, was at the tail end of two years of upgrades supporting the integration of the F-35B , according to Navy documents. That means the Navy will now have fewer options to deploy the next-generation fighter in the Pacific. The Navy awarded the $219 million modernization contract to General Dynamics, National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. in 2018, which had options for up to $250 million. Bonhomme Richard is one of four large-deck amph…
BREAKING: USS Kidd Destroyer Called Off, Jump in COVID-19 Cases.
The novel coronavirus has spread aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Kidd at sea in the Caribbean, forcing the medevac of one crew member and infecting at least 16 others, the Navy said Friday. The ship is returning to port, where the crew of 300 will disembark and likely be quarantined while the destroyer undergoes a thorough cleaning, actions similar to the response to COVID-19 cases aboard the carrier Theodore Roosevelt in the Pacific, said Jonathan Hoffman, the Pentagon's chief spokesman. The Navy has not reve…
F-35 Joint Program Office Saved for Now and Under Discussion
WASHINGTON – The compromise version of the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act protects the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) from elimination, but requires the Pentagon to report on alternatives for the management of the joint strike fighter by the end of March. The Senate Armed Services Committee's version of the NDAA , rolled out in May, included language that would disband the JPO after the F-35 reaches full-rate production in April 2019. At that time, control of the plane would devolve to the Air Force and Navy, …
