Russia and India are currently working on the development of a smaller
version of the supersonic cruise missile "BrahMos", which could be
commissioned in the Indian army by 2017, said Sivathanu Pillai,
President of "BrahMos Aerospace, talking to ITAR-Tass.
In order
to mount the missiles on fighter jets, the weight of the warheads needed
to be reduced, and the mini version called “BrahMos-M” will be suitable
for the same.
The new BrahMos-M will be modified to be used on IAF’s upgraded Mig-29 and Mig-29k. There are plans to also integrate them into Mirage-2000 and Rafale in the future. India and Russia are currently working on the BrahMos-A for the Indian Air Force which could be launched from Sukhoi-30MKI's. BrahMos-A will lose around 500 kg from the Land based version but it is still too heavy and Sukhoi-30 air frames have to be strengthen to carry extra weight of the missiles.
The 6 meter long missile with a weight of 1.5 tons can be mounted on Su-30MKI and MiG-29 fighter aircrafts. The missiles will also be suitable for other combat vehicles of the Indian Air Force.
